Joining a temporary visa holder in South Africa: plan each family member's position
If your spouse or parent is a foreign national with temporary permission to stay in South Africa, your starting question is different from joining a South African citizen or permanent resident. The accompanying-family framework can be relevant to a qualifying spouse or child of a holder of one of the listed temporary visas. Establish the principal person's exact category first, then review what each joining family member wants to do. [B02B12]

Before you start
This page explains that research path. It does not decide that a family member qualifies, establish working rights, or replace an individual review of current documents.
Use the right family category
The 20 May 2024 immigration amendment replaced regulation 11(4). Paragraph (c) covers accompaniment of a holder of a visa issued under sections 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20 or 22, with the proviso that the accompanying person is that holder's spouse or child. This is a prescribed-activity visitor framework, not an unrestricted permission for every relative or household member. [B02B12]
| The person you plan to join | Start your research here | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| South African citizen or permanent resident | Family overview or spousal guide | Citizen/PR-linked family questions are different from temporary-holder accompaniment |
| Foreign temporary work-visa holder | This guide and the principal person's work route | Identify the exact visa and each joining person's activities |
| Foreign temporary study, retirement or other listed visa holder | This guide and the applicable principal route | Do not assume an employer is the responsible sponsor |
| Someone whose status or category is unclear | Visa overview and individual clarification | Resolve the principal status before selecting a family application |
“Dependent” is not enough information on its own. Describe the relationship and relevant age/circumstances without deciding the legal definition yourself. If a parent, adult child, another relative or a person in a complex care arrangement will move, ask specifically whether this framework covers that person.
The principal person's record is part of the preparation
Identify their passport and actual visa, category, validity and intended activity. If they have only an application or proposed job offer, record that accurately rather than calling it an issued visa. Confirm whether family submissions can be prepared together and what evidence is needed if the principal decision is still pending.
New York's published long-stay visitor checklist, updated June 2026, asks a spouse or dependent child of a listed visa holder for that holder's visa copy and an affidavit of financial responsibility. That illustrates the documentary link; New York's local forms, residence rules, fees and processing estimate are not universal instructions. [B02B13]
Where an employer is helping, agree who will supply which record and who will answer legal questions. An employer arranging travel should not assume its work-visa project includes every family member's school or work permission. The hiring foreign workers guide explains employer responsibilities; it does not promise a Karoo corporate service.
Residence, employment and school need separate answers
Accompaniment describes why someone will stay with a principal holder; it is not an answer to every activity that person might undertake. Do not infer employment, business or study permission from being named as a spouse or child. Identify the desired activity and have the appropriate category, authorisation and conditions checked before relying on it.
For a child who will attend school, obtain a specific answer on immigration status and enrolment documents. For a spouse with a job offer or an intention to work remotely, describe the actual work rather than calling it “just helping the family.” Start from the study guide and work overview for orientation; those pages do not decide a change of status for you.
Build one plan with a row for each person
| Person or task | What to record privately | What remains to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Principal holder | Exact visa, relevant dates, proposed changes | Evidence and timing for the family application |
| Joining spouse/partner | Relationship basis and intended activities | Applicable relationship definition/evidence and activity permission |
| Each child | Age, relationship, schooling and parental arrangements | Individual status, consent/guardianship and institution evidence |
| Funding | Who will pay living, school and travel costs | Current required assurance and acceptable evidence |
| Shared dates | Move target, school term, job date and document expiry | Which dates can change if decisions do not align |
Keep names and document numbers out of an online planning tool. For early reading, labels such as “joining adult” and “child A” are enough. The evidence can be discussed through a verified channel when it is needed.
Relationship and child records should explain the facts
Identify marriage, birth, adoption or relevant court records without assuming one certificate answers the full application. The New York checklist includes marriage evidence and, where applicable for children, parental-consent, adoption and parental-responsibility documents. The current requirement for a particular family must be confirmed with its receiving authority. [B02B13]
If a record is missing, names differ, a parent will not travel or a relationship has changed, make that a visible question early. Do not substitute an improvised affidavit for a required record without checking what is legally acceptable.
Plan for changes without inventing a result
Ask what must happen if the principal changes employer, institution or category, if a visa expires before the family's planned stay ends, or if the relationship changes. Obtain a person-specific answer before acting. A pending application receipt or an employer's assurance should not be treated as a general permission to work, remain or travel.
Older checklists may still ask for medical reports. Directive 10 of 2026 waives the report requirement in the specified visa and permanent-residence regulations for future and pending applications. It does not remove every separate medical-cover, vaccination or route-specific evidence question. Confirm current implementation with the receiving authority rather than copying an old bundle. A fictional example: a transfer and a separate job offer
Illustration only — not a client or approval story. A foreign employee is preparing a South African transfer. Their spouse expects to take a local job and their child will attend school. Instead of assuming the employee's application permits all three activities, they create separate questions: the principal transfer route; the spouse's residence and employment permission; the child's status and school records. The employer supplies its documents, while the family seeks a coordinated individual review. No visa decision or start date is predicted.
Common questions
Is this the same as a South African citizen's spousal visa?
No. This page concerns joining a foreign temporary-visa holder. The spousal guide starts with a citizen or permanent-resident partner. [B02B12]
Can any relative use accompaniment?
Regulation 11(4)(c)'s wording concerns the principal holder's spouse or child. Other relationships need their own route review; financial support alone does not establish that this category applies. [B02B12]
Can we submit one set of documents for the whole household?
Prepare shared records coherently, but confirm the application and evidence requirements for each person. Ask which copies, references and principal-holder documents must accompany each submission. Do not rely on one family's experience as a universal filing rule.
Does a spouse automatically get permission to work?
Do not assume so from the accompanying relationship. Have the actual category, conditions and proposed work checked before starting. A broad claim on an isolated checklist should not settle the point for your circumstances.
Your next useful step
Write down the principal's exact visa and one intended activity for each joining person. Use the first-conversation guide to prepare the unanswered questions, and the application-process guide to organise the sequence. No active family application or representation service is promised here.
