Moving to South Africa: put the decisions in the right order
A useful move plan shows what depends on what. Immigration permission, a housing decision, a shipment and a work or study start are connected, but they are not the same milestone. Organise the unresolved decisions before letting a calendar date turn into a chain of expensive commitments.

Before you start
This guide helps you sequence research and preparation. It does not promise a moving date, provide a universal document list or establish permission for any member of a household.

Begin with the people and the activities
Write a short activity plan for each person: what they intend to do, where and for how long. Keep work, study, family and other questions visible rather than assuming that one person's plan answers everything for everyone.
If a route is still unclear, start with the visa-topic overview. If someone may accompany another applicant, use the accompanying-family guide. These are reading paths; they do not substitute for reviewing actual circumstances.
Keep three questions separate: what permission may be relevant, where the appropriate process takes place, and what evidence or decision is still needed. The application-process guide owns those steps; this moving guide connects their unresolved outputs to practical commitments.
Make a dependency board, not only a to-do list
| Decision or task | What it may depend on | Useful record before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Work or study start | The actual permission and relevant employer/institution arrangements | Named contact, unresolved condition and decision still required |
| Housing commitment | Location needs, verified terms and the household's timing assumptions | Included costs, cancellation/refund terms and conditions to clarify |
| Shipment | Customs position, inventory, carrier scope and realistic receiving arrangements | Written quote, exclusions, storage assumptions and customs questions |
| Travel | Actual documentation and applicable travel/entry steps | What has been checked and which bookings can be changed |
| First days after arrival | Access to accommodation, communications and essential services | Practical contact list and alternatives if one arrangement fails |
This is a proposed planning method, not a legal checklist. A contract or deposit may have consequences even if your immigration plans change, so ask for the actual terms before paying rather than assuming “the visa took longer” makes a commitment reversible.
Separate research, conditional arrangements and irreversible commitments
Research can progress while some decisions remain unresolved: compare addresses, obtain quotes, ask institutions questions and assemble an inventory. A conditional arrangement needs its conditions understood in writing. A non-refundable booking or a notice that ends your current accommodation is a different level of commitment.
Mark each proposed payment or decision with its actual cancellation, refund, change and expiry terms. Identify the question that needs resolving first. This does not require waiting to learn everything; it requires knowing which uncertainty you are accepting and what a changed plan would cost.
Do not use a published processing target as your guaranteed move date. The processing-times guide explains why submission, an estimate and an outcome are different milestones.
Build a monthly plan and a transition cash plan
The living-cost guide covers the ordinary recurring budget. For the move itself, create a separate transition ledger: travel, deposits, shipping, temporary accommodation, setup and overlap between old and new commitments where relevant.
Use dated written inputs and flag unknowns. Keep the actual due dates, not only a total. If two payments fall before a refundable deposit comes back, that cash timing matters even if the long-term monthly budget looks manageable. No standard deposit, shipping price or relocation allowance is invented here.
Treat shipping as a separate customs task
SARS publishes a DA304 household-effects declaration that calls for an inventory and distinguishes a motor vehicle through a separate DA304A declaration. [B03A03] That is a reason to resolve the customs position before a carrier packs everything as one undifferentiated shipment.
Prepare an inventory, identify any vehicle or unusual item separately and ask which current forms, restrictions and supporting evidence apply to your own move. This guide does not establish eligibility for a duty/VAT rebate or suggest that immigration approval automatically clears goods. Do not rely on a general household-effects FAQ to decide the treatment of a vehicle or regulated item.
Ask the carrier or relevant customs professional to separate transport, packing, clearance, storage, insurance and delivery in the scope where applicable. An inexpensive headline shipping figure may leave a practical question unanswered; read the actual terms rather than assuming every item is included.
Check ordinary life at the address you are considering
Evaluate the routine you would actually have: travel to work or study, access to care, communications and service arrangements. For example, Cape Town publishes service-specific tariff information for its 2026/27 year. [B03A02] A national estimate should not replace the actual property's supplier and billing terms.
Use the healthcare guide for access and cover questions and the safety-research guide for location-specific research. A pleasant photo, a gated entrance or a recommended suburb is not the whole evidence base for a household decision.
Fictional example: the shipment moves later than the plan
A household has a possible travel date, but its receiving accommodation and shipment-clearance questions are unresolved. Instead of treating the date as fixed, it requests storage and delivery terms, separates essential arrival items from the main shipment and records which commitment depends on which answer. This fictional example illustrates planning; it does not prescribe a customs procedure or establish anyone's permission to travel.
Prepare a practical first-days note
Keep confirmed accommodation details, essential contacts, the relevant health/emergency information and access instructions available privately. Agree how the household will communicate if one person's phone or connection is unavailable. Keep original documents secure and ensure the right person can locate necessary records without putting identity information into a public planning board.
This note is operational preparation, not a claim that every service will be available immediately or that any arrangement guarantees safety. The local authority, provider or responsible professional must answer the specific access question.
Questions people ask
Should I book everything while waiting for a decision?
This guide does not make that decision for you. Record what each commitment depends on and its actual change/refund terms. A provisional date is not an outcome.
Does one person's visa plan cover the whole family?
Prepare each person's activity and permission questions separately. The relevant family and category guides explain the questions to research; no household-wide permission is inferred here.
Are household goods and a car one customs task?
The SARS form distinguishes household effects and a motor vehicle. [B03A03] Establish the actual treatment and documentation for each before arranging the shipment; no rebate is assumed.
Which task should I do first?
Identify the unresolved decision that could change the largest commitment. That may be permission, an institution/employer arrangement, an address or a customs question. Assign an owner and obtain that answer before treating dependent arrangements as settled.
Keep the next step small and specific
Write your three largest commitments and the unknown each depends on. Use conversation preparation to turn the permission-related item into a clear question. Continue with your budget and local research while preserving those dependencies.
