Moving to Johannesburg: map the workweek before choosing a home

If you will travel to different workplaces, clients or household destinations, one convenient-looking address may not solve the whole week. Start your Johannesburg plan by recording the actual places you need to reach and when.

Before you start

This is an address-and-routine guide, not a ranking of suburbs. It does not describe any area as automatically safe or affordable. If you are still comparing cities, use the city-comparison guide before narrowing the shortlist.

Ask the employer for the practical location details

Get the actual workplace addresses and expected attendance pattern. Ask whether the role involves different offices, client sites, shifts or late work. A description such as “Johannesburg-based” is not enough for planning the commute.

Keep proposed employment separate from immigration permission. Confirm the actual role and activities being assessed; read the work overview if that part of your plan is unresolved. Do not let a preferred starting date become an assumption that permission will be in place.

Check the connection beyond the station

Gautrain’s official feeder-route directory lists Sandton, Rosebank and Park Station connections, including Sandton–Fourways, Sandton–Randburg, Rosebank–Melrose Arch and Park Station–Parktown. Use the current operator information to investigate the connection that fits your destinations. A nearby station is only one part of a journey. [B04C11]

For each workday, check the walk or transfer at each end, the route’s operating days and the return journey. If you need a car or another paid connection for the final section, include that arrangement and its cost rather than counting the station as the destination.

Rea Vaya publishes information on its own routes, stations and service phases. It is a separate network to investigate where relevant. Do not treat a planned phase, an old operating-hours page or a citywide route label as confirmation of a service running for your intended trip today. [B04C12]

Where accessibility matters, ask the operator about the actual journey, including the stops and the street-level connection. General accessibility language does not establish the suitability of every segment.

Use an ordinary-week journey sheet

Test the demanding day as well as the easiest one. Record what happens if the person who normally drives is unavailable. This is more informative than comparing homes using one distance to a central landmark.

Establish the property and municipal responsibilities

The City of Johannesburg’s eServices site describes access to rates, water and electricity invoices, building-plan progress and online maps. Treat it as a route to official information, not confirmation that a property’s account, use or condition is satisfactory. [B04C13]

For a rental, ask who holds each account, whether charges are included, how consumption is measured and who responds to account disputes. Ask the landlord or manager to explain the actual arrangements in writing. Do not assume that a tenant can simply take over an owner’s online account.

The City’s official e-services guidance also identifies routes for logging faults and water-related queries. Record the correct official channel and keep a reference when reporting a problem; distinguish a building-management issue from a municipal one. [B04C14]

Keep the full household budget visible

Request evidence for the proposed rent and included charges, then add the transport plan you have actually tested. Include healthcare, necessary connectivity and continuing commitments elsewhere. Use the cost-of-living guide so that an apparently lower rent does not conceal a more demanding travel arrangement.

If buying, separate the transaction from permission to live or work. The property-purchase guide helps you prepare questions for the appropriate property professional.

Worked example: one job, two workplaces

Fictional preparation example, not a client case or neighbourhood recommendation. Musa and his partner shortlist a home near a station for a role described as based in Sandton. They later learn that two days a week would involve another office and occasional client visits.

They obtain the actual addresses and test each journey using current operator information and practical alternatives. They compare a second home using the same workweek, school and care needs. For both properties, they ask who manages utility accounts and which costs are included.

Their revised plan may still favour the first home. The decision now reflects the role they would perform, the full household routine and the unresolved permission dependency.

Common questions

Can I plan to live without a car?

Test your complete journeys at the relevant times, including care and late returns. Do not answer from the presence of one station or a general claim about the city.

Which area is safest?

This guide does not give an area-safety verdict. Use the safety-research guide and assess actual routes and properties with current local evidence.

Is a short visit enough to decide?

A research visit can help, but record what it did not test: workday timings, household commitments, services and the actual housing terms. Keep those gaps visible.

Your next useful step

Ask for the exact work pattern, choose two addresses and complete the journey sheet. Resolve the busiest day and the property’s account responsibilities before committing. Use prepare your first immigration conversation for the permission questions that remain.
