Opening a bank account in South Africa: ask about the account that fits your circumstances

Before gathering a generic “FICA pack,” establish the bank, product, customer category and application channel you mean. Someone living abroad who needs local payments may be offered a different process from a temporary resident moving for work or study. A bank's ability to consider an application is not a guarantee of approval, credit or every payment facility.

Before you start

This guide helps prepare a practical enquiry. It does not select a product, certify tax status or offer account opening through Karoo.

Why the requirements are not identical at every bank

The Financial Intelligence Centre's revised Guidance Note 7A, dated 1 September 2025, describes a risk-based approach to customer due diligence. Institutions assess relevant risks and determine appropriate verification measures; the framework does not justify treating one education article's list as the complete statutory checklist for every customer. The revised note replaces the earlier February 2025 note and old Guidance Note 7. [B04B04]

In practical terms, ask what the bank needs to establish your identity, understand the proposed relationship and verify the information relevant to that product. A request about where funds come from is different from asking whether you meet a product's income condition. Both may arise, but they do different jobs.

Start with where you live and what you need the account to do

Tell the bank whether you live abroad, are entering South Africa temporarily, or have another residence position. Explain the actual use: salary receipts, rent and household payments, study expenses or occasional South African transactions. Do not assume that immigration residence, tax residence and a bank's customer classification are identical.

If tax residence is uncertain, keep it as a separate question. The tax-residence guide and tax-registration guide address different topics; a bank account is not evidence that a tax question has been resolved.

Two bank examples show why product-specific checks matter

Standard Bank's dedicated non-resident banking product page lists certified passport, recent proof of address, offshore statements and income evidence. It also distinguishes that product's non-resident category from temporary-resident banking and some Common Monetary Area circumstances. That is a named bank's current product information, not a national account-opening guarantee. [B04B05]

Absa's non-resident banking page describes its own application documents, including a letter of authority concerning existing bankers, certified passport, utility address evidence and application forms. It separately says certain valid permit holders may qualify for a temporary-resident account through a branch. [B04B06]

These are examples to make the distinction concrete, not a ranking or endorsement of either bank. Check the current product page and confirm instructions directly for your customer category. Do not mix one bank's digital process with another's branch requirements to create a fictional universal checklist.

Prepare an evidence inventory before you send it

Comparison of Information area, Useful preparation, What the bank must clarify
Information areaUseful preparationWhat the bank must clarify
IdentityIdentify your current passport or applicable identity recordAccepted original, certification and remote-verification method
Residence/statusDescribe where you live and the relevant immigration recordCustomer classification and any status documents for the chosen account
AddressIdentify records showing the actual address you provideAccepted alternatives if bills are not in your name

Tax informationIdentify what you know and what needs professional confirmationApplicable declarations and current reporting requirements
AccessNote where you will be when applying and collecting any cardAvailable channel, attendance and verification steps

The table is a discussion method, not a list of documents that every applicant must supply. Ask for the bank's current written instructions before ordering certifications or sending records. If a name or address differs across records, identify the discrepancy instead of editing documents to match.

Compare the service you will use, not just the advertised monthly price

Write down a normal month's expected transactions: incoming salary or transfers, rent, debit orders, cash access and foreign-currency needs. Ask how the account handles each one and which fees apply. Separate account charges, transaction charges, currency conversion and any international transfer costs. No fee quoted on this page is a current offer.

If remote access is important, confirm what can be completed abroad and what depends on a branch visit or another verification step. Ask how access is restored if your phone changes and how you must update the bank if your address or status changes. Avoid planning an essential payment around an unconfirmed opening date.

Keep the application channel secure

Use the bank's real website or a verified branch/contact channel to establish the process. Check the domain carefully before sending a passport, address record or statement. Search results and copied branding are not enough to verify an intermediary.

This educational page does not need your account numbers, login, tax identifier, balance or document scans. Do not give a third party a password or one-time code to “help” with a generic account enquiry. If someone proposes transferring money before you have confirmed the account and beneficiary through the bank, pause and verify the instruction directly.

A fictional example: the wrong account category

Illustration only — not a client or approved-account story. A person living abroad wants to pay South African property expenses. They download a generic local-account list and worry that they have no South African utility bill. Instead, they ask two banks which product and customer category fit their actual residence and transactions, what foreign-address evidence each accepts, and how onboarding works from abroad. They compare the written answers before transferring funds. Nothing in the example establishes approval, tax treatment or credit eligibility.

Common questions

Can a foreign national ask a South African bank to open an account?

The named banks publish products and enquiry paths for non-resident or temporary-resident customers. The applicable product and approval conditions must be checked for your facts; it is not a promise that every foreign national qualifies for every account. [B04B05, B04B06]

Is one passport-and-address checklist enough everywhere?

No. Current risk-based due-diligence guidance and bank-specific product conditions should be considered separately. Ask the chosen bank for its own current instructions. [B04B04]

What if proof of address is not in my name?

Describe the circumstances and ask which alternative evidence the bank accepts for the product and channel. Do not assume an affidavit or another person's bill is automatically sufficient.

Does an opened account prove that I can work or that I am tax resident?

Do not use a banking outcome to decide immigration or tax status. Those questions require their own legal and factual review.

Your next useful step

Prepare a one-page comparison with your actual residence, intended transactions, preferred application channel and missing evidence questions. Read the official Standard Bank non-resident product page or Absa non-resident page directly if considering those examples. Connect the timing to your move plan, while keeping banking, immigration and tax decisions distinct.
