Critical skills work visas: match the actual occupation before counting points
A listed critical occupation carries 100 points under the 18 October 2024 determination, but an employment offer remains mandatory and the other prescribed requirements still matter. [B06A04] A similar job title or a calculated score is not permission to start work.

Before you start
The useful first task is to compare your actual proposed work with the gazetted occupation and its requirements, then identify the evidence that supports the comparison. This guide helps structure that preparation without deciding whether you qualify.
Read the whole gazette entry
The official October 2023 list sets out an OFO occupation code, occupation name, description, minimum qualification and professional-body information. [B06A06] Use the primary list rather than an undated online table that may omit a column or qualification condition.
Build a comparison note with the exact entry on one side and your actual qualifications, experience and proposed duties on the other. Record a mismatch honestly. A title used by your employer may be broader, narrower or simply different from the gazette's description.
Do not change a job description solely to make a search term look like a match. If the occupation or qualification relationship is uncertain, identify the specific issue for the appropriate reviewer or body. The objective is accurate evidence, not a plausible keyword combination.
Keep occupation, qualification and professional confirmation separate
Regulation 18(5) addresses written skills/qualification and experience confirmation, the professional-registration issue where law requires it, and evaluation of foreign qualifications by SAQA with the specified translation framework. [B06A07] Those are different evidence functions.
| Evidence question | What to establish | What not to substitute |
|---|---|---|
| Occupation match | Exact entry and actual work described | A familiar job title alone |
| Foreign qualification | What the qualification is and the relevant evaluation position | An employer's informal NQF estimate |
| Professional confirmation | Which competent body/department addresses the required issue | Membership of an unrelated organisation |
| Registration where relevant | Actual applicable professional requirement and evidence | A generic claim that one rule fits every profession |
| Employment offer | Actual employer, proposed role and documented offer | A recruitment conversation treated as permission |
The table is a preparation aid, not a universal list of documents or a certification of any professional body. Establish the current category/channel instructions and any applicable later direction, especially if an evaluation or registration process is pending. This page does not decide that every pending item bars an application or that it is automatically excused.
Ask the actual responsible body which evidence it needs for the task. Keep copies of the instructions and outcomes with dates so that a later reviewer can see what was assessed, rather than just an assertion that the file was "verified".
What the points notice does and does not decide
Notice 5448 applies to general work and critical skills work visas. It distinguishes reaching the threshold through a listed critical occupation from reaching it through other combinations; it also expressly retains the other requirements. [B06A04]
Use that distinction before choosing a route label. A high salary or qualification score should not be represented as proof that an occupation is listed. Conversely, the occupation's 100 points do not remove the mandatory offer or settle qualification and professional-evidence questions.
The notice's Trusted Employer criterion is 30 points, but an employer's size or recognisable brand is not evidence that the criterion applies. [B06A04] This guide does not provide an eligibility calculator or certify an employer. See the work overview to compare the relevant routes.
Connect the applicant and employer workstreams
The applicant can usually assemble their own qualification and experience account, while the employer controls the offer and proposed role. Agree who will resolve inconsistencies between those records before selecting a start date.
For example, the offer may use an internal seniority title while the supporting description explains a different scope. Record the facts and ask how they should be assessed; do not assume the title alone resolves the occupation question. Check that the named legal employer is consistent across the proposed arrangement.
Use pre-hire preparation for the recruitment-to-start sequence and employer coordination to assign evidence owners. Neither the employer's offer nor this educational guide makes an immigration decision.
Keep the application evidence current
Identify which documents depend on another institution, which have been received and which remain unresolved. Obtain current instructions for the actual filing category and location through visa requirements, rather than copying a general-work or older critical-skills pack wholesale.
The 2024 points notice includes an old medical-report example, which must be read with the later July 2026 waiver of the specified medical reports. [B06A05] Do not repeat that example as a current universal requirement. The waiver also should not be described as removing all supporting documents or health conditions.
Separate document preparation, professional-body/evaluation work, filing and decision time. A prospective employer's preferred start date does not establish that every dependency will finish by then. Read processing-time planning; no universal estimate or priority service is promised here.
A critical-skills visa is not a permanent-residence decision
The list's notice refers to critical skills in relation to work-visa and permanent-residence applications. [B06A06] That shared reference does not make the two applications interchangeable or establish the result for a particular person.
If long-term residence is part of the plan, identify the actual PR ground and its evidence separately through permanent residence and work-based PR preparation. This page does not convert a points score into a PR guarantee or assert that every person must wait under the same ground.
Fictional example: an impressive title leaves a specific mismatch
A candidate receives an offer with a broad technology-management title. While comparing the gazette, they find that the proposed duties and qualification evidence do not yet explain the exact entry they had selected. They record that question and ask for the role and evidence to be reviewed, rather than changing the title in the application to make it look settled.
This fictional example is not about a particular listed occupation or an approval/refusal. It shows the value of resolving a narrow mismatch before spending money on an assumed route.
Questions people ask
Is the job offer optional because the occupation gives 100 points?
The points notice makes the offer mandatory. [B06A04] The listed occupation does not remove that condition.
Can I rely on an old list or a list of occupations in demand?
Use the relevant immigration gazette and check its currency. The primary list used for this research is GN3934 of 3 October 2023. [B06A06] A list produced for another purpose should not silently replace it.
Is professional membership always the same as statutory registration?
The regulation distinguishes the written confirmation task and registration where required by law. [B06A07] Ask which evidence is applicable to the actual occupation rather than treating all memberships as interchangeable.
Can I start once a tracker shows that my application was submitted?
This page does not determine permission from a tracker status. Check the actual permission and conditions before the work activity; use individual immigration review if that position is unclear.
Prepare a specific occupation question
Record the exact list entry, actual duties, qualification/evaluation position, relevant professional question and offer. Use conversation preparation to focus on the largest mismatch before relying on a score.
