Immigration compliance: organise the right review

Immigration compliance is about more than keeping a document with a future expiry date. The Immigration Act addresses the conditions attached to a person's status as well as the employer's responsibilities. [B02A01] A useful review connects the actual permission with what the person or organisation is doing, then identifies any change that needs attention.

This hub helps you choose the right review task. It does not certify compliance, check your records or offer a Karoo regulatory service.

Choose by the decision you face, rather than downloading every checklist. An individual planning a new activity needs a different review from HR examining an existing employee record.

Keep three records distinct

Permission record: the actual visa, permanent-residence permission or other authority being relied on, including its conditions and any relevant later decision. A category label alone may not answer what a person can do.

Activity record: what is actually happening or proposed. Describe the employer, role, place, duration or study arrangement where relevant. Avoid vague labels such as “helping out” when the tasks themselves need examination.

Action record: what is unresolved, who will review it and what the next step depends on. An application receipt belongs here as evidence of a process step; do not silently turn it into proof of a new permission. Section 10(8) distinguishes applying for a change from obtaining status, while a specific applicable concession may need separate consideration. [B02A01, B02A03]

These are organising categories, not official application forms or an automated legal assessment.

Changes deserve their own checkpoint

A review made for one arrangement should not be treated as an answer to every later arrangement. New work, a different role, a changed employing entity, altered study plans or proposed travel may raise a different question.

Record what changed and which earlier assumption it affects. Ask for the actual permission and current authority to be examined before relying on the old conclusion. If a deadline, refusal or present-status problem is involved, general reading cannot resolve it and this site does not provide an urgent-response undertaking.

A checklist needs a source and a date

Even an official checklist can retain an item affected by a later national instrument. For example, Directive 10 of 2026 waived the medical-report requirements specified in regulations 9(1)(c) and 23(1)(f), within its stated scope. [B02A04] That example supports checking the current rule; it does not justify ignoring other requirements.

Keep the source alongside the action: which document, which section, what it answers and when it was checked. An official policy announcement, an enacted rule and a person-specific decision are different kinds of evidence. The application-process guide explains how to organise preparation without pretending that one checklist fits everyone.

Related administration should not obscure the immigration question

You may also be researching tax registration, driving-licence conversion or property-purchase questions. Keep the questions, responsible bodies and supporting documents for each task separate. If one item is being relied on to answer another, ask for the specific authority rather than assuming that progress on an administrative task resolves immigration permission.

Fictional example: two questions in one moving plan

A household has started researching a licence conversion while one adult is considering a new work activity. They create separate notes: what the licensing authority needs, and whether the proposed work matches the adult's immigration permission. They do not use progress on the licence task as the answer to the work question. This fictional example illustrates coordination; it makes no finding about either permission.

Questions people ask

Can I get a compliance pass from this website?

No. The guides help organise evidence and questions. They do not inspect a file or certify a person or employer as compliant.

Is a document's expiry date enough?

No single date answers every question. Conditions and the actual activity also matter under the Act. [B02A01] Use the individual or employer guide to identify what needs review.

Does a concession cover everyone waiting for a decision?

No general conclusion follows from a headline. Directive 7 of 2026, for example, specifies covered categories and conditions. [B02A03] Determine whether the exact instrument applies before relying on it.

Which guide comes first if I am being hired?

Read the pre-hire guide with the employer's coordinating contact, and keep your own activity and permission questions separate. After onboarding, the ongoing employer guide owns records and change management.

Choose one review task

Start with the guide that matches your immediate decision. Then prepare one sentence describing the activity, one unresolved question and the person or authority needed to answer it. The conversation preparation guide can help you keep that next step focused.
