The retired-person visa: plan the temporary stay and what comes next
A retired-person visa is a temporary immigration route for a person intending to retire in South Africa who meets its requirements. Start with the intended stay, the financial basis and any activities you plan to undertake. Then identify the correct receiving office and current application instructions.

Before you start
The route can accommodate seasonal or continuous residence. Section 20 provides for a visa of no more than four years and allows renewal, subject to the financial requirements. Neither the maximum duration nor the possibility of renewal means every applicant receives four years or an automatic extension. Read the dates and conditions actually issued. [B05B03]
The retirement overview compares the broader planning questions. This guide concentrates on the temporary route, preparing its evidence and managing a later renewal or change of plan.
What does the route cover?
Section 20 addresses a person intending to retire in the Republic for longer than three months. It contains alternative financial limbs: specified pension, annuity or retirement-account payments for the rest of the applicant's life, or prescribed minimum net worth. The fact that the visa is temporary does not remove the lifetime wording from the first limb. [B05B03]
Do not infer eligibility from the label “retired” alone. Establish which statutory financial limb the documents address, whether the intended activity fits, and whether the general and category-specific application evidence is complete. This page does not impose an invented universal minimum age or promise that any person above a particular age qualifies.
For the published amount and the distinction between income, capital and joint ownership, use the retirement financial requirements guide. The rules should be applied to the evidence rather than reduced to an online balance check. [B05B01, B05B02]
Keep work and family questions separate
Section 20 permits the Director-General to authorise work on specified terms and conditions. It is not an unrestricted work entitlement arising automatically from holding a retired-person visa. Disclose proposed employment or other work and obtain advice on the activity and permission before starting it. [B05B03]
Section 20(1A) also contemplates an appropriate visa for a spouse and dependent children. “Appropriate” matters: do not assume that another household member can travel, study or work simply because the main applicant has applied. Each person's status, evidence and intended activity needs its own answer. [B05B03]
Start with the accompanying-family guide if that is your household question. Where a relationship with a South African citizen or permanent resident may create a different route, use the family overview rather than treating all family applications as interchangeable.
Prepare an application that can be checked
First identify the receiving authority for your location and circumstances. Its current instructions should tell you the applicable submission channel, appointment arrangements, forms, document format and payment procedure. A checklist from another mission can explain the kind of evidence involved but should not be copied as your own filing instructions.
For example, Toronto's retired-person guidance gives examples of pension, rental and investment-income records. Canberra publishes its own retired-person instructions and duration information. These are named official sources for their jurisdictions, not proof that every office requests the same number of bank statements, certification format or supporting declaration. [B05B04, B05B05]
Use the visa-requirements guide to organise the category and office-specific evidence, and the application-process guide for the broader workflow. This page does not establish a universal right to apply from inside South Africa or change status while visiting. Have your actual location, existing status and proposed filing position checked before relying on an in-country process.
Resolve dated instructions before paying for documents
An old checklist can continue to circulate after a later directive. Directive 10 of 2026 waives the specified medical reports for future and pending visa and permanent-residence applications under regulations 9(1)(c) and 23(1)(f). If an older mission list still requests that report, ask how the current directive is being implemented. Do not extend the report waiver to every health document or to healthcare-cover planning. [B05B06]
Similarly, confirm current payable fees through the receiving process. The August 2026 fee amendment is an enacted instrument, distinct from the earlier consultation draft; it does not establish every applicant's total cost, exemption or overseas payment arrangement. Budget separately for official fees, submission charges where applicable, document work and any professional services you choose. [B05B11]
For care and cover continuity, read healthcare and medical aid for retirement. Immigration evidence and the practical ability to access care are separate planning tasks.
Plan around the visa that is actually issued
| At this point | Record or check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Before applying | Intended length and pattern of stay; financial limb; household activities | Establishes the application being prepared |
| On receiving a decision | Name and passport details, dates, endorsed conditions and any work authorisation | The issued document governs the actual permission |
| During the stay | Changes to financial sources, passport, family plans or intended activity | Original assumptions may no longer describe the situation |
| Before renewal | Current requirements, current evidence, expiry date and applicable filing procedure | Renewal is a fresh compliance task, not a calendar reminder alone |
| If plans change | Actual status and lawful options for the new activity or residence objective | A retirement visa should not be stretched to cover a different purpose |
Section 20 allows one or more renewals subject to subsection (1), but it does not dispense with evidence or a decision. Plan early enough to establish the applicable deadline and submission requirements for your circumstances. Do not assume that an appointment booking or a pending application alone creates whatever residence, travel or work rights you need. Ask about those questions explicitly before acting. [B05B03]
Temporary residence does not become permanent automatically
Retirement permanent residence is a separate route under section 27(e), with its own financial and application assessment. Holding or renewing a temporary retired-person visa should not be described as automatic conversion to permanent residence after a fixed number of years. [B05B03]
If permanent settlement is the objective, read permanent residence through retirement and permanent-residence requirements. Compare the routes before assuming the temporary application is the only relevant task.
A worked planning example
Illustration only — fictional people, not an approval story. Ana wants to spend part of each year in South Africa and later consider permanent settlement. She prepares a temporary-route evidence file, records her pension terms and identifies the office responsible for the application. Her partner's intended activities are assessed separately.
If a visa is issued, Ana's next planning record uses its actual expiry date and conditions. A later proposal to take paid work triggers a separate permission question. Her longer-term residence goal triggers a permanent-residence comparison, rather than an assumption that the temporary visa will convert itself. No result, duration or eligibility is implied.
Common questions
Can the visa cover seasonal residence?
Section 20 expressly contemplates seasonal or continuous residence. The actual period and conditions still depend on the visa issued and the person's circumstances. [B05B03]
Will I receive a four-year visa?
Four years is the statutory maximum for the temporary visa, not a guaranteed grant period. Check the decision and endorsement. [B05B03]
Can I work after applying?
An application does not itself establish work permission. Section 20's provision for Director-General authorisation must not be presented as automatic entitlement. [B05B03]
Is renewing the same as applying for permanent residence?
No. Renewal concerns the temporary route; retirement permanent residence is a separate section 27(e) assessment. Prepare for the route you actually intend to pursue. [B05B03]
Your next useful step
Write a one-page summary of the planned stay, each household member's intended activity, the financial source and any existing South African status. Add the receiving office's current instructions and list unresolved points. Use the first-conversation guide to prepare the questions without sending sensitive records through an ordinary enquiry.
