British citizens moving to South Africa: separate entry advice from a relocation plan
UK travel guidance has an explicit scope: people travelling from the UK on a full British citizen passport. Its short-visit guidance is not a decision on a long-term move, a work activity or every British passport category. [B07A09] Start with your actual passport, citizenship history and intended South African activity.

Before you start
This guide focuses on UK-side document and channel questions. It does not choose a visa, determine dual nationality or promise that moving will produce a particular tax or financial result.
Establish the passport and citizenship facts
Write the exact passport category rather than only "British". Record any South African birth, citizenship or earlier residence history that needs clarification. Other household members may have different passports and histories; do not assume one person's entry guidance covers everyone.
The FCDO page specifically flags South African–British dual-national travel requirements. [B07A09] If that issue may apply, check the actual status and passport question with the responsible authority before travel. This guide does not decide whether a person retained, lost or regained South African citizenship.
For further reading, use dual citizenship or citizenship by descent when those are the questions, rather than forcing every case into an immigration application.
Choose the intended activity before the document pack
The UK travel page describes visits of up to 90 days within its stated scope. [B07A09] That should not become a plan to move indefinitely or undertake any chosen work activity.
Describe what you intend to do, with whom and for how long. Then use work routes, family routes, retirement, study or permanent residence. If an overseas job will continue remotely, read remote work and keep the employment/tax questions separate.
This article does not say a visit, application receipt or employer's approval grants the particular permission you need. It helps identify the question to have examined before buying a document package.
Use the immigration channel, not an unrelated civic booking
The South African High Commission's UK immigration page says VFS facilitates short/long-stay visa and permanent-residence applications and links the relevant channel. [B07A10] Follow the current category-specific information from that official starting point.
A civic appointment for South African documents should not be assumed to be the same service as a foreign national's visa submission. Before booking or travelling, establish the actual category, present residence, application method, document-return process and current charges through the appropriate channel. No live appointment availability or universal filing location is promised here.
Keep a dated instruction record. If different pages seem inconsistent, identify the exact service and document involved before deciding they apply to the same task.
Request the right UK criminal-record document
Home Office guidance identifies ACRO police certificates for people emigrating or asked by an embassy, high commission or consulate to produce such a certificate. It separately discusses other checks, including checks for work involving children. [B07A11] A familiar employment DBS record should not simply be assumed to perform every immigration-document function.
First establish the South African category's actual request. Then confirm the correct issuing process, information required and document format with the issuer. This guide does not tell every British applicant to order the same police record or claim that it covers residence in other countries.
The High Commission's police-clearance page concerns South African SAPS records. [B07A12] It is not an instruction that your UK police record comes from SAPS. Keep UK history and any relevant South African/other-country history separate in the evidence index.
Legalisation depends on the document and recipient
The UK Legalisation Office checks certain UK documents' signatures, stamps or seals and attaches an apostille where appropriate. It does not legalise documents issued outside the UK through that service. GOV.UK advises checking with the recipient whether originals/certified copies and particular signatures are needed. [B07A13]
That means the useful question is not "Can someone apostille my whole folder?" It is which specific record, issued where, in what form, for which receiving requirement.
GOV.UK also distinguishes paper apostilles from e-Apostilles and lists documents that cannot receive the electronic version, including General Register Office certificates and ACRO police certificates for England and Wales. [B07A13] Do not select a digital process just because another document in the file can use it. This page does not establish what the South African recipient will accept for your case.
Build a UK document decision sheet
| Item | Question to settle | Dependency to record |
|---|---|---|
| Passport/citizenship | Exact category and any South African status issue | Clarification before relying on entry advice |
| Requested UK police record | Actual receiving requirement and correct issuer | Issuer process, result and required authentication |
| UK civil record | Original/copy, issuing authority and name consistency | Replacement or certification before legalisation |
| Record issued elsewhere | Which country's authority handles it? | Do not assume UK Legalisation Office can process it |
| Proposed visa submission | Actual category and current official channel | Evidence and appointment dependencies |
This sheet is a planning method. Leave an unresolved answer visible rather than replacing it with an assumption from someone else's move. Share passports/civil records only after establishing the recipient, purpose and appropriate channel.
For the rest of the move, use moving to South Africa and quote-based living costs. Pension, healthcare, tax and currency decisions need their own factual review; this guide supplies no entitlement, price comparison or personal tax conclusion.
Recheck older medical paperwork before ordering it
The July 2026 DHA directive waives the medical reports specified by its terms for future and pending applications. [B07A04] Reconcile an older visa pack with that later instrument. Do not assume either that every old item remains necessary or that the waiver removes all health/supporting-document requirements.
Read visa requirements alongside the actual receiving-channel instructions. Use current issuer information and actual quotes when budgeting; no fixed total or processing date is supplied here.
Fictional example: an electronic option is not available for every record
A UK-based applicant plans to legalise several documents digitally. They discover that one requested civil record falls within GOV.UK's excluded electronic categories. They check the recipient's actual required form and adjust the sequence before committing to a submission date.
This fictional example determines neither that person's document requirement nor visa eligibility. It illustrates why the record type and receiving instructions matter more than a generic promise of an online document service.
Questions people ask
Does living in the UK mean the British-citizen travel guidance covers me?
The FCDO page states its passport/travel scope. [B07A09] Check your own nationality, passport and residence facts rather than assuming UK residence settles them.
Is the High Commission's SAPS page the UK police-certificate process?
No. Its subject is the South African record. [B07A12] The relevant UK issuing task needs its own confirmation.
Can all documents get an e-Apostille?
GOV.UK lists exclusions and tells users to check the recipient's requirements. [B07A13] Do not assume the electronic option fits every record.
Does a British passport decide my South African tax residency?
This page makes no tax determination. Read tax-residency questions and obtain advice on the actual residence, income and cross-border circumstances.
Prepare a UK-specific review note
Record the passport category, any citizenship-history question, intended activity, channel and exact UK document dependency. Use conversation preparation to resolve those questions before paying for documents or relocation arrangements.
